Serengeti Sopa Lodge

This large hotel is located on an escarpment overlooking the south-western Serengeti Plain. It offers comfortable accommodation for those looking for a safe environment with standard amenities while on safari.

Accommodation at Serengeti Sopa Lodge

The Lodge boasts just fewer than 70 standard rooms as well as a selection of two-storey VIP suites. All rooms have private balconies, feature two queen-size beds with mosquito nets, a mini-bar/ fridge and hairdryers and fans are available on request.  Rooms are all en suite with large shower areas. However, hot water is only available at certain times of day, (morning and evening, normally 6-9). Suites feature a dining and lounge area on the lower ground floor with a king-size bedroom on the upper floor.

Rooms are a good size and generally surface-clean. Though décor is somewhat dated as is some of the furniture and the fittings. This means that some rooms can appear dirty or shabby. Mosquito nets especially need replacing in many rooms, especially as one of the major draw-back of a stay at this lodge is its insect problems. Due to the hotels location it does attract numerous and various bugs. While this is not uncommon on Safari, it is true that the lodge could tackle the issue more actively/effectively.

Food and Drink at Serengeti Sopa Lodge

Food is both fresh and varied. Breakfasts are substantial with numerous options on offer. Packed lunches can be a little bland, but this is one of the inevitable drawbacks of this mode of ‘eating on the move.’ While the food at dinner is inoffensive it is nothing special. However, the dining room has a lovely atmosphere and the service is exceptional. Perhaps the less exciting dining options are due to the wide range of tastes and ages the hotel is attempting to cater for.

The bar area is comfortable, though decent professional bar service in these remote areas is hard to find. The hotel offers a good choice of wines as well as local beers and fresh juices.

Service at Serengeti Sopa Lodge

The hotel’s staff are friendly and well trained. Small touches, such as welcome drinks and towels help to alleviate the sense that the lodge is less intimate or authentic than smaller safari camps.

The hotel is equipped with a well maintained pool of a good size with a great view. Other services available include laundry, baby-sitting, parking, gift shop and a money exchange facility.

Things to do at Serengeti Sopa Lodge

The obvious lure of the lodge is its excellent location for viewing a wide variety of wildlife. However the hotel can also arrange various excursions including bush dining options, hot-air balloon safaris and drives out to watch the sunset with drinks and canapés.

In the evenings the lodge’s bar gets lively and there is often live music and dancing. The lodge has its own choir who occasionally perform. For those wishing to simply unwind in peace there is also a TV and video room. For those looking to learn something about the surrounding area the lodge occasionally arranges culture talks.
