Crater Forest Tented Camp

This is a basic camp-resort offering standard and satisfactory tented accommodation not far from the Ngorongoro Crater. However, the site is a rough 20 to 40 minute drive from the crater base (depending on conditions) and does not boast a crater view.

Accommodation at Crater Forest Tented Camp

The camp comprises of 15 sleeping tents under thatch, all with en suite bathrooms with running water and flushing toilet. Hot water in the region is problematic at most basic-luxury lodges and camps and water pressure and temperature can vary. However, Crater Forest Camp normally offers on demand hot water.

Tents are a reasonable size with small lounge areas and private verandas that overlook the forest (offering a pleasant, but not spectacular view). Tents are equipped with electric light though problems have been reported with some of the fittings. Rooms include a small fireplace or firepot. While this is a special feature and can prove very comforting and magical, smoke has been known to overwhelm the tents on occasion.

Accommodation is largely clean and tastefully decorated, though some of the soft furnishings are rather dated and shabby, which can give the impression that the camp is less clean than it could be.

Food and Drink at Forest Crater Camp

The camp offers both full and half-board packages. The restaurant serves traditional African dishes as well as continental options. Food is simple and rustic in style and generally good quality and tasty though it is subject to seasonal variation.

The camp offers lunch boxes for those wishing to eat-on-the go, however these tend to be understandably blander.

The bar at the camp is well stocked and reasonably priced and guests can enjoy their drinks at the fireside.

Service at Forest Crater Camp

Staff are friendly and polite though language and training is less perfect than at some of the more expensive camps and lodges. This leads to a less formal style which some guests prefer. Some staff can seem a little too eager for tips.

Overall, while good the service on offer does not always seem to justify the slightly higher prices at this camp than at some others. If you are prepared for a basic and pleasant stay then the camp will satisfy. The camp is not offering luxury accommodation.

Things to do at Crater Forest Camp

The camp is used as a base for exploring the Ngorongoro crater. However it is some distance from the crater along a scenic but rather bumpy track. Leaving the camp at a reasonable hour you are unlikely to reach the crater before 10am (already a busy time). Yet the camp’s location is itself quite charming. If you can bear this distance and enjoy the drive you will undoubtedly enjoy the local wildlife and environment.

Activities on offer at Crater Forest include mountain biking, cultural tours, tours of the coffee estate near which the camp is based and forest walks.
